Talking To Bali Wedding Vendors: Episode 1 - Resza Sebastian - Jiwa Photography

Resza Sebastian

Professional Bali wedding Photographer

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in wedding photography?

Hi there! I’m Resza Sebastian, born and raised in Bali. Photography has always been my passion, especially portraits and street photography. I love capturing raw, honest moments—something about it just lights me up! After a while, I realized that wedding photography was the perfect way for me to combine my love for storytelling and creativity. I officially started JIWA Photography back in 2015 right here in Bali, and now we’re lucky enough to have a branch in Singapore too. It’s been such a fulfilling journey!

How would you describe your photography style?

My style is a blend of two things I’m super passionate about: street photography and portraiture. I love capturing those authentic, candid moments, the ones that tell a story, and then mixing that with artistic, posed portraits. It’s the perfect balance of raw emotion and beautiful composition, which is exactly what I think a wedding day is all about.

What inspires your creativity when capturing weddings?

Honestly, the wedding itself is my biggest inspiration! There’s something about the energy of the day—the interactions between the couple and their guests—that really sparks my creativity. Every couple is so unique, and their connection, love, and joy is what I aim to capture. It’s like painting with light and emotions, and that always excites me.

Can you walk us through your process on a wedding day?

I start by meeting the couple and my team at the venue to break the ice and make everyone feel comfortable. I believe that when the couple feels relaxed, the magic happens! After that, I dive into shooting the details—like the gown, shoes, and decor—and capture any spontaneous moments. From there, it’s all about going with the flow. Every wedding has its own rhythm, and I try to document it as authentically as possible, so the memories come alive.

What has been your most memorable wedding shoot and why?

Every wedding has its own special energy, but if I had to pick, I’d say intimate weddings hold a special place in my heart. There’s something so raw and beautiful about smaller weddings—more genuine interactions, more intimate moments, and an overall feeling of authenticity that’s so moving to capture.

What advice would you give couples to help them get the best photos on their wedding day?

Trust your photographer, but more importantly—just be yourselves and enjoy the moment! Genuine emotions always translate into the best photos. The more relaxed and authentic you are, the better the photos will feel. Let go of any worries about being "picture perfect"—the best shots come from being true to yourselves!

How do you handle unexpected challenges, like bad weather or shy subjects, during a shoot?

Honestly, some of my most epic photos have been shot in rainy weather or cloudy skies! There’s something about those conditions that can add drama, warmth, and even a little fun to the photos. And when it comes to shy couples, my background in street photography helps. I’ve got the patience and technique to capture candid moments without making anyone feel uncomfortable. I like to think of myself as a stealth photographer—getting the shot without anyone even knowing I’m there!

What is your favorite piece of equipment, and why?

I always roll with two camera bodies, one wide lens, one medium telephoto lens, and a flash. This setup gives me the flexibility to capture everything—from wide crowd shots to close-up, intimate moments. It’s everything I need to get the job done, while still being light and nimble enough to move around the wedding day seamlessly.

Do you have a "must-have" shot list that you work from, or do you prefer a more spontaneous approach?

I lean toward a more spontaneous approach because every wedding has its own vibe, and I want to capture that. But of course, there are some key moments I always aim for, like the first kiss, the couple's portrait, and family shots. I believe in balancing the must-haves with the joy of living in the moment.

How do you ensure the best lighting and composition in your photos, especially in challenging environments?

I work with both natural and artificial light, depending on the situation. If it’s dark or challenging lighting, I’ll use flash to keep the atmosphere warm and intimate. I also rely on my street photography experience to work with whatever lighting I’ve got, finding the best angles and compositions to make sure the photos always pop, no matter the setting.

Can you share a moment from a wedding that touched you personally?

I’ve got to say, I’m always moved by the "first look" between the bride and her father, or the daddy-daughter dance. There’s something so powerful about that moment— it’s such a beautiful, emotional bond. It makes me wonder how I’ll feel the day I experience that moment at my own daughter’s wedding one day.

How do you establish a connection with the couple to make them feel comfortable in front of the camera?

I believe the key to great photos is trust. I always make sure to connect with the couple first—talking to them, making them laugh, and helping them feel at ease. It’s important for them to know they can be themselves around me, and I’ll capture their love in its most authentic form. When you’re comfortable, you’re able to show the real emotions, and that’s when the magic happens.

What upcoming trends in wedding photography are you excited about?

I’m super excited about the rise of street photography style in weddings! More and more couples are embracing raw, unposed moments, and I’m here for it. There’s something so beautiful about capturing life as it happens, without interruption. I’m loving the shift towards more authentic storytelling in wedding photography.

Where do you see your photography journey taking you in the next few years?

I dream of documenting weddings around the world—meeting couples who are full of heart, witnessing beautiful celebrations, and capturing those moments in a way that truly reflects who they are. Here’s hoping I can travel more and meet amazing people along the way. Fingers crossed for what’s to come!
